Spare a Rose, Save a Child

Posted on by Heather

Valentine’s Day is approaching. It’s the season for sending flowers and chocolates. What if this year, you bought one less rose and saved a child’s life with the money you saved? What if this year, you could tell the person you admire that you made a difference in the world in their honor?

Spare a Rose, Save a Child is an initiative that makes this ‘what if’ a reality. We, as a community, have a chance to show our love for people around the globe with diabetes.

Spare a Rose, Save a Child was inspired by and benefits the Life for a Child program, sponsored by the International Diabetes Federation. Life for a Child aims to accept “contributions from donors [to] go to established diabetes centers enabling them to provide the ongoing clinical care and diabetes education these children need to stay alive.”

All you have to do is buy one less rose this Valentine’s Day and share the value of that flower with a child with diabetes in the developing world by making a donation through the IDF contribution page. Your special person still gets flowers, and you both show some love to a child with diabetes out there who really needs it.

What started this initiative?

Well, a group of D-do-gooders got together, namely- Kerri Sparling, Kelly Close, Manny Hernandez, Bennet Dunlap, Adam Brown, and Jeff Hitchcock – with the support of some friends at Johnson & Johnson, and discussed how to use social media to better serve the diabetes community. Spare a Rose, Save a Child was born of their collaboration. This initiative was created by these members of the DOC that work to make a difference in the lives of people with diabetes everyday. They are buying one less rose this Valentine’s Day, will you?

Thank you for sharing this incredible effort. Together, we have brought the greatest gift of all to children with type 1 — the gift of life.
