The Diabetes Hands Foundation, a 3-year-old nonprofit, is designed to reach people with diabetes through a number of online and social media communities that connect roughly 200,000 visitors per month.
The “hands” portion of its handle is meant to convey a sense of “community and connection,” harken back to an earlier “Word In Your Hand” program, and reference the fact that many diabetics test blood sugar levels by pricking their fingertips, according to co-founder Manny Hernandez, a web developer who was diagnosed with adult onset diabetes about 10 years ago.
